For first-time buyers, there's an automatic perception that affordable homes must be away from the city core. If your job is located downtown, this makes you a commuter, sometimes upwards of one hour each way. This has become an accepted reality for many.
But, it doesn't necessarily have to be that way.
Toronto's thriving downtown condominium community continues to grow in popularity as singles, couples, and even smaller families recognize the benefits and enjoyment of downtown living. Walking to work has become their "commute." It provides great exercise, and shaves off hours spent riding in a congested TTC bus or GO train.
Many have even found that giving up one or all of their vehicles has been surprisingly easy. Most obviously, money is saved. Purchasing a parking space can cost tens of thousands of dollars, not to mention the costs of maintaining a vehicle.
Downtown home dwellers take advantage of convenient shopping steps away from home instead of driving to the nearest super mall, and like the idea that they are contributing to a greener environment. Furthermore, condominium buildings often have great amenities such as pools that make giving up a backyard easier for families. Creating and preserving parks and green spaces has been an important focus of city planning, and these are often within a short distance from condo communities.
It's true that you may be giving up space that you might otherwise have living in the 905 suburbs, but the benefits of a downtown condominium lifestyle just might outweigh these issues.
Lastly, the resale value is significant: downtown condominiums often sell very quickly.
